What is your Cause? A Cause is a principle or idea that people believe in or work for because it needs to become a reality. A Cause is something to get behind because there is a problem that needs to be fixed or an injustice that needs to be rectified.

Serve United has identified 8 Causes to work on with community leaders in order to bring about a better reality across the greater Sacramento region. These Causes are described as “Community Health Characteristics” and were chosen after extensive research into county, city and school district descriptions of what their aspirations are for their communities. In other words, what does a thriving or good community look like? How do we describe such a place? What problems or issues are preventing this from happening? What are the activities that would bring about change to see the preferred outcomes be a reality?

In 2014 and 2015, we are in the process of drawing together Cause “Champions”- organizations and leaders who desire connection, cooperation and collaboration to go after these Causes. What’s your Cause? Follow your passion and let’s serve together to make the changes that will create healthy and good communities for every person in the greater Sacramento region.

Marriage

Intact, joyful and lasting marriages are consistently at the center of stable communities. Cohabitation and divorce have undermined this stability. With in depth preparation, ongoing support and crisis intervention services, we are able to provide couples every opportunity to cultivate and maintain healthy marriages and households.

“In the original creation, God made male and female to be together. Because of this, a man  leaves father and mother, and in marriage he becomes one flesh with woman—no longer two individuals, but forming a new unity. Because God created this organic union of the two sexes, no one should desecrate his art by cutting them apart.” -Mark 10:6-9 The Message

Seeking God for Marriages (Seek God for the City)

Thank God for sturdy marriages the reflect His faithfulness and beauty. Pray especially for marriages which are strained to a breaking point or falling, that God will bring both hope and help; that He will heal broken hearts and restore intimacy; for every marriage, that God will refresh and re-center homes in Christ.

Prayerwalk: Pray for the married couples in your neighborhood.

Family

The best outcome for a child is to know the love of a permanent and strong family. Strong families make strong communities. However, the number of disengaged or absent guardians has undermined this strength. Life stressors and lack of family support can cause parents to be unable to properly care for their children, fueling the foster care system. Through parent training, mentorship and foster and adoption services, we can see every child have the positive influence of a strong family, parent input and hopeful future.

“A father to the fatherless, a defender of widows, is God is his holy dwelling. God sets the lonely in families, he leads out the prisoners with singing…” –Psalm 68:5-6a

“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” –James 1:27

Employment

Living wage employment allows people the opportunity to adequately provide for their household. Lack of education, work experience, or specific job skills matched with the availability of living wage jobs results in a skills gap leading to joblessness, financial instability, and hopelessness. Empowering every person, regardless of barriers, to access in-demand skills that match business needs changes a community. Employment allows people to provide for themselves, contribute to business development, and take pride in sharing their talents with others.

The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and keep it.” – Genesis 2:15

For we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” –Ephesians 2:10

Education

Doors open for those who finish their basic education. Ninety percent of employers look for those with a high school diploma or GED. Children start on a path that leads to dropping out when they don’t learn to read in the early grades and don’t have the supportive learning environments that go beyond the classroom. By creating school-church-service organization partnerships that support literacy, core skills and life skills, it gives every child the opportunity to learn and grow and we will see an increase in the graduation rate in our schools.

Wellness

Individuals best contribute to their societies when they are in a state of good physical and mental health. Hunger and lack of access to wholesome foods, as well as illness, habits and addictions, can hinder people’s strength, fitness and mental well-being. Two things are necessary for physical wellness. The first need is accessible and available nutritious food and fitness opportunities that strengthen the body. The second necessary element is organizations and programs committed to diagnosis, prevention, intervention and recovery opportunities that heal and feed body, mind and soul. With these, we can engage the health needs of a community with measurable results.

Sexual Integrity

Every man, woman and child has the right to security, integrity and wholeness in their sexual lives. Unfortunately, the reality we face is the exploitation of sexuality, the apex of which is expressed in sex trafficking through which young women and men, and sometimes children, are victimized. The ultimately tragic result of an exploitative sexual culture is abortion. Through lifting up the value of every human life and every person’s right to security in their own body, we see positive sexual expression. Advocacy organizations, faith communities, schools and law enforcement work together for education, prevention, intervention and restoration in lives.

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor;” –1 Thessalonians 4:3-4

Neighbors

We have been created to live in community with one another and community is best realized when we act in love as good neighbors. In our fast paced culture, it is easy to become disconnected from the people who live around us. Disconnectedness among neighbors can allow a slower response when emergencies or violence occur. Our neighbors are diverse and some require specific attention. Immigrants and refugees face challenges adjusting to a new place and culture and often feel marginalized because of a lack of neighborliness. The elderly and single moms with children in the home can be vulnerable and in need of intentional connection. Through programs that help connect us to our neighbors, we can become the flourishing relational communities that offer connectedness, safety and hope for all of our neighbors.

“If one falls down his friend can help him up, but pity the one who falls and has no one to help him up.” –Ecclesiastes 4:10

“For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” –Galatians 5:14
